The Katrina of All Fences

2) Respectable Bush comprehensivist types like Chertoff want to substitute a sophisticated hi-tech "virtual fence" for the crude actual physical fence.

3) Border control types say the "virtual fence" won't work.

4) Respectable Bush comprehensivists like Chertoff in fact cut back on actual fencing, choosing the "virtual fence."

5) Where it's installed, the actual fence works.

6) Where it's installed, the "virtual fence" doesn't work .

7) Chertoff feels sorry for himself ("I thought I heard myself getting roundly criticized ... as squishy and soft").

Then you can explain to me why Chertoff still has his job.

P.S.: Tammy Bruce has one unsubtle, but not implausible, explanation--Chertoff was only doing what he was supposed to do:

In other words, we've all just been taken for a ride ....

Couple at work as roof fell in on them

The most important thing to me is that my wife is alive," Andani said.

Thursday's explosion at Tuxedo World, 1918 Grand Ave., created an "earthquake that shook everything" around him. When he learned that the blast was caused by natural gas, he wasn't surprised.

Just before the explosion occurred, his wife complained of a strong odor of gas, and Andani, of Gurnee, said he was about to call the Fire Department to complain.

The Andanis were two of eight people injured when the gas explosion tore the roof off of Tuxedo World and the five stores sharing the building. One woman remained hospitalized Friday.

All injuries were suffered by people inside Cellular Concepts and Cleopatra's Hair Salon. No one was in Tuxedo World at the time of the blast, and Waukegan Fire Inspector Steve Lenzi said that is fortunate.

If we turn the clocks back another three years we find what I refer to as the "Other Outbreak' on April 27, 1971, when multiple violent twisters resulted in numerous fatalities and damages in the millions across South-Central KY. This, too, happened in a "La Nina" year. CLICK HERE for weather maps from 4/27/71...this one is day 3 from the drop down list. In fact, La Nina conditions were consistent over the central Pacific waters from 1970 all the way into 1976.

Let's go back a bit further to 1965. Lo and behold, there was another memorable tornado episode known as the "Palm Sunday Outbreak". This one didn't have quite the impact on our immediate area as the those in '71 and '74, but it still ranks as one of the deadliest in U.S. history. The hardest hits states were Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

Paul Happy With 2nd in Nevada

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Texas Rep. Ron Paul said his second-place finish in Nevada's GOP presidential caucuses on Saturday showed his message is being heard and that he has more supporters than he thought.

"Millions of people have heard this message and this is why coming in second is very great, it sends a great message," Paul said to loud cheers. He conceded that South Carolina's primary, where he was running a distant fifth, was not his to win.

Paul took several swipes at former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who got fewer votes than Paul in Nevada and was trailing Paul in returns being tabulated Saturday night in South Carolina. He told the audience about a confrontation with Giuliani during this month's debate in South Carolina. He said Giuliani "cut me down."

"Tonight, if this is the final tally on that confrontation, we got three times as much vote as the mayor got," he said, referring to Nevada.
