1950's ranch becomes a 21st century ultra-modern

Ansley Park may be one of Atlanta's most architecturally diverse neighborhoods. Travel along its winding roads and you'll see everything from Italian villas to substantial two-story American four squares, from unassuming ranch homes to magnificent Tudor Revival mansions, with a surprising number of modernist homes thrown into the mix for a little contemporary punch.

Today's story is the tale of a relatively small, nondescript, three-bedroom, two-bath 1950s ranch that grew wings and became a modern house for the 21st century. Meet Ellen and Andrew Barber and their 11-month-old daughter Kate.

Bodies found near train tracks

Berkeley County Sheriff's spokesman Blair Jennings said there were no signs of foul play and no suicide note.

Coroner Glenn Rhoad said they're investigating the possibility that the child flew out of her mother's arms when she was hit by the train, but they don't know for sure. Officials said it's possible the child floated downstream from where her mother was hit.

"I don't think we'll ever know for sure," Rhoad said.

Salisbury said they hope to determine the exact cause of death following autopsies today.

"We're determined to try to get a better indication of what was going on in her life," Jennings said.

Investigators were talking with Major's husband and parents to determine what happened leading up to the deaths.

Jennings said Major was last seen around 8:30 p.m.

Council OKs spending of $20,000

LAFAYETTE — The City-Parish Council on Wednesday approved spending $20,000 to make safety improvements to the downtown parking garage near the parish courthouse.

The improvements — a security fence and a roll-up door — are expected to reduce overnight intrusions into the garage, which over the years has attracted vandals and scofflaws.

The condition of the garage has been an on-going issue of contention between the city-parish and tenants of the parish courthouse.

The garages are open to the public during business hours, though a large portion of those users are employees of parish agencies such as the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court, 15th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The two parking garages help generate positive revenue for the city-parish.
