When Change Is Not Enough: The Seven Steps to Revolution

I take the lessons of history very seriously and I believe that those who DO learn from history are NOT doomed to repeat it.

But we also need to consider the effects of current conditions that that were not present in the historical past:

In the "scary" column we have: - Television - 9 Billion humans on the Earth - Nuclear weapons - Massive dependency on fossil fuels

In the "hopeful" column we find: - Digital information technologies (doing more with less) - The Internet - Widespread emancipation of women in the northern hemisphere. - "global" conciousness (think "whole earth" photographs from space).

One could say that past generations had to contend with similar innovations and challenges. In the long view, television may be no more revolutionary than the printing press.

Girardi, Please Don’t Default to the Vets

Joe Girardi has a ton of bullpen options in the Yankee's camp. The Yankees could probably make two bullpens - both better than the Giant's relief corps - from their group. Chad Jennings has an extensive rundown of the Yankee's options here.

The Yankees may have a lot of decent options, but they'll need more than a decent bullpen to beat the Red Sox this year. Here is the depth chart that I would draw, assuming that Girardi carries 12 pitchers.

The Starters

1. Chien-Ming Wang - Pencil in him for 200-220 innings with an ERA of 3.70. Better yet, use pen.

2. Andy Pettitte - Despite all the health worries, he's missed just 1 start in 3 years, pitching at least 214 innings each time.

3. Mike Mussina - I have a feeling that you'll see a marked improvement from last year, thanks in part to Dave Eiland.

Product Review: Venzero LINQ

The LINQ is the eighth multimedia player addition to the line up of Venzero, an innovative worldwide provider of mobile consumer electronics and multimedia lifestyle.

The company obtained a reputation for its daring features and clever designs, which they have been producing since 2005. Through the years, Venzero has developed know-how and expertise in a broad range of multimedia players. Their first player was a low-budget mp3 player with limited options, while current innovations such as digital television and a WIFI receiver should dumbfound Venzero's competition.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

Venzero LINQ
Manual
USB cable
Stereo earphones
Venzero Multipass for MusicMarker service
Software CD

FEATURES

FM Radio
Built-in microphone
WiFi Receiver for the streaming of online radios and digital music from WMP 11

UW men's hockey: Defense carries Badgers one step closer to home ice

CLOUD, Minn. -- To fully appreciate what kind of effort the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team put forth Friday night, go right to the last page of the box score.

That's where you'll find the statistical summary of shots. St. Cloud State got 15 shots on goal; Wisconsin blocked 17 others.

That element of team defense is a big part of the formula for road success that churned out a critical 2-1 victory for the Badgers at the National Hockey Center.

Add in a determined effort in the 12th-ranked Huskies' end of the ice and a bit of luck near the end, and the 13th-ranked Badgers moved a victory away from essentially locking up a home series in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

"That's one of the things that we knew we would have to do," Badgers coach Mike Eaves said.

Kaylors’ 2007 renovation rearranges rooms but keeps home’s cozy ...

Although plans had been made in 2005 to sell the East Brainerd home that had been in her family nearly 60 years, Beth Kaylor felt she couldn't let it go.

Four generations of her family had lived in the cozy rock and Masonite home, so she and her husband, Kendall, decided to buy it from her aunt, renovate it and move there from Ashwood, Mrs. Kaylor said of the home at the corner of East Brainerd and Fuller roads.

Structurally, the now 2,200-square-foot house is much the same as when her grandparents lived there, but every room without plumbing has a different function.

The Kaylors turned the 1970s living room added by her grandparents, Eugene and Argie Wilson, into their master bedroom.

The room their grandparents used as a den became their living room.

Earl Campbell, an old, hurting man at 52, remembers his runs

Earl Campbell's back is killing him — so badly, in fact, that the man hasn't slept in a bed for almost seven years. He spends a fair amount of time in a wheelchair, and he can't get around on his feet without using a walker. Man, what he'd give to be able to hop into his van and drive, to sail alone on the open road, no music on the radio, no sound in his ears but the hum of tires on highway.

But he can't. Not right now. Earl Campbell's 52-year-old body hurts him so much that he relies on a driver — his longtime friend James "Sugar Bear" Yates — to take him to work, or to fetch a can of Sprite at the 7-Eleven, or run him up to visit his brothers and sisters in Tyler. The most indomitable running back in the history of Texas football — as a collegian and a professional — has come to know what it is to be vulnerable.

The tiger kidnapping

A "tiger kidnapping" is the term given to the taking hostage of bank or security employees, or their families, to carry out a robbery, as happened at the Securitas depot in Tonbridge. It gets its name from the predatory nature of the crime.

Such kidnappings are growing and will increasingly involve "softer banking sector targets as well as cash-rich businesses", according to Control Risks, the security and business intelligence consultants.

In 2006, the latest year for statistics, there were 20 tiger kidnappings in the UK, up from seven in 2001, with many more aborted attempts left unrecorded, Control Risks said.

"As physical security has improved at the traditional heist targets such as major banks, criminals have focused on the human element," said James Lewry, a senior consultant at Control Risks.
