| After 4 years, it's the day of 'leaplings'
She answered it was just that my child wouldn't have an actual birthday most years if I were to deliver on Leap Day," said the Ellicott City resident. Eight years ago today, Durning did just that. She and her husband, Ben Burnet, welcomed Ani into their lives at Howard County General Hospital about 3 a.m. on her due date, just as predicted. .
Community lost trust in Sheriff’s Office since deputies joined ICE ...
Among attendees was Naples attorney Keith Williams, who receives two to three calls a week about a person being pulled over without a license. “You may say it's not a high priority, but it's still being done," he said. An estimated 38 illegal immigrants from a total of 120 investigations have been deported after being investigated and arrested since the Sheriff's Office partnership with ICE in October. Another concern is an increase in children left alone without a legal guardian, Caroline Brennan, of the Collier County Public Schools Head Start Program, told the group. ICE representatives urged illegal aliens to say all the facts when they are detained. There are also alternatives to detention. “We aren't a heartless agency," said Sean Teeling, assistant field office director for ICE in Miami.
Monday wild card
And so, I'm making a plea to all of you to help me out with material. Apart from not being as smart, talented, or handsome as Dave (above), I have two other key disadvantages: I live and work in Spokane, and don't get over to North Idaho much. So I don't have much of a handle (pun intended) on the local political scene. I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy.
Sound Off! (Feb. 24)
This is to the city manager and the mayor: Why are you allowing high school children to ride with police officers? I thought their job was hard enough and dangerous. Plus, who's going to pay for one of these children if one of them happens to get hurt? It looks like some procedures need to be reevaluated with the sheriff's department. In my department, we were always taught to secure our weapon and not leave it in our car. So now if other countries decapitate our prisoners, that makes it OK for us to waterboard them? I don't understand your reasoning. Isn't the whole point that the United States is above that sort of thing? Aren't we supposed to be showing countries that we can't treat people that way? We all know that the Iraq war's being started over oil, and yet they threw in also that we were fighting against the atrocities that Saddam Hussein forced upon his people.
